PACE body on Garabagh to resume work
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will resume the activity of its sub-committee on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh later in April, its president, Movlud Chavushoglu, said upon arrival in Baku on Tuesday.
He said the work of the sub-committee, which was suspended last year due to the death of the sub-committee chairman, Lord Russell Johnston, will be resumed after his meetings with the representatives of Azerbaijan Samad Seyidov and Armenia’s David Arutyunyan.
Chavushoglu, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan, said the sub-committee was initially expected to be back on track in March, but the resumption of its work was postponed due to incomplete participation of all parties involved and the absence of the Armenian delegation at the meeting on the issue.
"Our goal is to resolve the frozen conflicts and assist in solving the problems outstanding between countries [PACE member states]. Therefore, after Azerbaijan, I will leave for Armenia," Chavushoglu told journalists.
In Baku and Yerevan the head of the assembly will discuss the Upper Garabagh conflict, and then will head to Russia.
PACE fully supports efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group mediating the conflict settlement.
During his Baku visit to last till Friday, Chavushoglu is scheduled to meet with President Ilham Aliyev, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov as well as representatives of political parties. On Thursday, Chavushoglu will visit Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second largest city, where he is due to meet with local officials. The PACE president is also expected to meet with civil society representatives and address the Azerbaijan State University of Languages.*
