Poland’s Kaczynski mourned in Azerbaijan
Scores of people gathered outside the Polish embassy in Baku since
Sunday morning to extend their condolences over the tragic demise
of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and other top officials who died
in the plane crash in western Russia.
Citizens – from rank-and-file people to representatives of numerous companies as well as public and political organizations – laid flowers in front of the diplomatic mission and lit up candles, saying they stand by the Polish people and share their grief. Foreign nationals were among those mourning the tragic developments.
The 96 victims of Saturday's plane crash include Kaczynski’s wife, Polish presidential administration officials, members of the Senate and Sejm, security chiefs and the governor of the national bank. The Polish government plane was carrying leaders from across national public life, who had been due to attend a memorial for the Polish victims of a World War II massacre by Soviet secret police at Katyn in the Smolensk region.
President Ilham Aliyev offered his condolences at the Polish embassy on Monday and signed the embassy’s book of condolences.
A commemorative service was also held at the Catholic Church of Baku.*
