Two EU commissioners to visit Azerbaijan
Two European Union commissioners are due to pay
their first visits to Azerbaijan within a week, says Roland Kobia,
head of the EU delegation to the country.
He told a press conference Tuesday that first, Stefan Fule, the EU
Commissioner for Enlargement and the European Neighborhood Policy
(ENP), will arrive in Baku on Friday. Fule will meet with the
Azerbaijani president, ministers of foreign affairs and economic
development, as well as representatives of political parties and
civil society. The agenda of discussions includes EU-Azerbaijan
relations and an association agreement that is to be signed within
Eastern Partnership, a program that envisions the EU’s closer
political, economic and energy cooperation with the three South
Caucasus states and three other countries. In conclusion, Fule will
visit refugees displaced by an armed conflict with Armenia.
According to Kobia, this will be followed by EU Energy Commissioner
Gunther Oettinger’s visit, due to begin April 14. Oettinger is
expected to meet with the president, ministers of foreign affairs
and industry and energy, president of Azerbaijan's state energy
firm SOCAR and other energy executives, as well as representatives
of non-governmental organizations. During the three-day visit,
talks will focus on the Southern Corridor and Nabucco
projects.*
