Rights champion addresses world over Azeri massacre

Azerbaijani Ombudsperson Elmira Suleymanova has urged the international community to condemn the massacre of Azerbaijanis committed by Armenian nationalists and their backers in 1918 in an address made over March 31, the genocide anniversary.
Suleymanova said international organizations and rights groups, which have declared war on international terrorism, should give an objective assessment to the Armenian atrocities. She called on the world to support Azerbaijan’s fair cause and impose terse sanctions on Armenia, which has elevated terror to the level of state policy.
The massacre was unleashed by the Baku Soviet (city executive power in the Soviet times) and Armenian Dashnaks (nationalists) in Baku and Ganja, as well as in Shamakhy, Guba, Neftchala and Kurdamir regions, between March 30 and April 3, 1918. According to official sources, about 700,000 Azerbaijanis were brutally killed, including some 30,000 people slain in Baku and different parts of the Baku province, and tens of thousands went missing.
The Ombudsperson’s statement said new facts have been revealed about the mass killings committed by Armenians in the northern Guba region. The endless human remains discovered at the mass burial there are graphic evidence of the Armenian vandalism.
The statement was sent to the UN secretary general, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, international and European Ombudsman offices, the Asian Ombudsmen association, the Ombudsmen of numerous countries and diplomatic missions accredited in Azerbaijan.
Diaspora organizations will hold a variety of events to commemorate the 1918 massacre in about 40 countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Canada.
Following a decree by former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev dated March 26, 1998, the last day of March is marked as the Day of Massacre of Azerbaijanis.*
