OSCE negotiator dismisses controversial reports
The French mediator brokering settlement to the Upper (Nagorno)
Garabagh conflict has expressed concern over the distortion of his
statement by the media in Armenia and, then, in Azerbaijan, during
a phone conversation with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar
Mammadyarov.
Bernard Fassier, who co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Group, was quoted by Novosti Armenii news agency as saying in Yerevan last Friday that Azerbaijan cannot win if hostilities erupt anew in the conflict zone.
"Azerbaijan's victory in case of a renewed war is impossible because I personally know about the bravery of the Armenian and Garabagh warriors," he reportedly told the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s Rose Roth seminar.
Fassier said that as a co-chair, and, in particular, as a military man, he would never assess the state of any army, adding that this would be unacceptable.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, is brokering peace talks.*
