Chief Economic Advisor of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Arnold Harberger arrived in Baku on Monday.
During the visit to last till December 9, Harberger will discuss with the Azerbaijani government key economic policy and governance issues, including exchange rate management, monetary and fiscal policy design, and public investment planning strategy.
Professor Harberger has examined in his work the macroeconomic and financial policy challenges associated with massive inflows of natural resource-based revenues. These issues are among the most important ones that economic policymakers will face in Azerbaijan over the next few years.
Harberger is a leading international expert on economic development and consults widely with international organizations and with developing countries in Central America, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. His advice on such matters as inflation control and real exchange rate management has been critical to the solution of macroeconomic problems in a wide range of developing countries.
Harberger has served as a consultant to 16 foreign governments, nine US government agencies, eight international agencies and foundations-including the International Monetary Fund, Asian Development Bank, and Organization of American States, and thirteen international corporations.
USAID has allocated $284 million to Azerbaijan since 1992. The projects funded by the agency have been drawn up for the activities aimed at achieving macroeconomic stability, stepping up the efficiency of expenditures related to the public sector as well as improving relations among micro, macro and medium entrepreneurs.
