UN failing to cite drug transit via Garabagh – Azeri official
Azerbaijan will urge the United Nations to include in its list a
drug trafficking route stretching from Afghanistan to Iran and
further to Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azerbaijani region under
Armenian occupation, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov has
said.
Hasanov, who chairs the state commission on fighting drug addiction and drug trafficking, said further that the UN has recognized three routes for the transit of narcotic substances through Azerbaijani territory: Afghanistan-Azerbaijan, Afghanistan-Iran-Azerbaijan and Afghanistan-Central Asia-Azerbaijan. However, despite being aware of Upper Garabagh’s being a major transit area for transporting drugs, the organization has not included the region in its list, he said.
Hasanov noted that Upper Garabagh, which is beyond Azerbaijan and the world community’s control, has turned into a territory used for growing and transit of drugs, as well as for camps training terrorists. Baku has repeatedly urged international groups to properly assess this situation, but as yet to no avail.
"These institutions have been failing to make attempts at countering drug trade and terror in Upper Garabagh for the sake of their interests. International organizations are well aware of the increasing drug trade and terror there, but are knowingly reluctant to address the issue. Those organizations manage to combat drug sales and the illegal circulation of narcotic substances in a number of countries and include the destinations of transit routes in their reports every year, but when it comes to the situation in Upper Garabagh, they take no action. This shows that the problem’s lingering on serves the interests of mafia groups within international organizations."
Upper Garabagh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenia since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Years of peace talks have brought few tangible results.*
