Armenian military placed on alert: sources
The Armenian military has been brought into high combat readiness
on orders from Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian, the local Aykakan
Jamanak newspaper claimed.
The paper said, however, that the ministry’s spokesman, Seyran Shahsuvarian, has not confirmed the report. He said that these rumors have been circulated amidst the country’s political circles and blown out of proportion. "We are working on our regular schedule," said Shahsuvarian.
However, a Defense Ministry source has told Aykakan Jamanak that substantial preparations are underway in the Armenian military.
"Talk of resuming military operations with Azerbaijan has lately increased. Furthermore, experts note that if Azerbaijan attacks, no one will come to the defense of the ‘Upper Garabagh Republic’ and it will be defeated," the source said.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for nearly two decades. Though the separatist regime in Upper Garabagh declared so-called independence at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991, this "independence", which blatantly tramples on international law, has not been recognized by the world community. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.*
