Azeri parliament re-elects Ombudsperson
The Azerbaijani parliament re-elected Ombudsperson Elmira
Suleymanova for a second term on Friday by a majority of 106
votes.
Besides Suleymanova, the senior rights defender’s post was sought by Faig Gurbanov, head of the Justice Ministry department for human rights and public relations, and Teymur Malikaslanov, the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Azerbaijan.
Under the country’s laws, the Ombudsperson is elected for seven years. Previously, the post could not be held by the same person more than once, but after changes were made to the pertinent law in 2009, one may serve in this capacity for two terms.*
