Turkey’s Gul warns Obama over Armenian ‘genocide’ resolution
Turkish President Abdullah Gul phoned his US counterpart Barack
Obama shortly before a US congressional panel voted Thursday on a
resolution on Armenian "genocide" allegations regarding the 1915
developments in Ottoman Turkey. Though there has been no comment
from officials, Turkish media reported that President Gul had
reminded Obama that adoption of the resolution in the House of
Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs could harm ongoing
efforts to reconclie Turkey and Armenia.
The two neighbors have faced enmity for decades due to Yerevan’s genocide claims and Armenia's occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally.
During the phone conversation, Gul also said Washington should not allow U.S.- Turkey relations to be damaged.
Obama, for his part, called on Turkey to speed up the ratification process of the Turkish-Armenian protocols on normalizing relations signed in late 2009, the reports said.*
