Azeri warplane crashes, pilot dead
An attack plane of Azerbaijan’s Air Force crashed during a test
flight on Wednesday afternoon.
The Su-25 aircraft’s pilot, Famil Mammadli, died as a result of the accident, which took place in the Tovuz district at around 5 p.m., according to the Defense Ministry.
A commission of the Ministry and the Military Prosecutor’s Office is investigating causes of the crash.
Local media reported that the plane, which took off from a military base in the Shamkir district, plummetted to the ground in a deserted area 3 km away from a village in neighboring Tovuz.
Presumably, the plane exploded in the air before crashing, Tovuz deputy police chief Adil Suleymanov said, adding that the crash was most likely caused by a malfunction.*
