EU to allot over €120m to Azerbaijan
122.5 million euros will be allotted to Azerbaijan
as part of the over 5.7 billion euros allocation in the next three
years to reinforce political cooperation and promote economic
integration between the European Union and its neighbors.
The funding will support political and economic reforms, regional and cross-border cooperation in the partner countries covered by the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP), as well as projects in areas including climate change, transport, energy and environment.
"We want to engage further in cooperation with our neighbors, proving that EU remains a solid and reliable partner in the current tough times," said EU foreign policy chief, Baroness Catherine Ashton.
She said the EU offers closer political and economic cooperation complying with its partners' aspirations and capabilities. "Increased EU funding is an important tool to achieve these goals," Ashton said.
EU neighbors will receive more than 2 billion euros in 2013, compared to 1.6 billion euros in 2010.
Stefan Fule, the Commissioner for Enlargement and the ENP, says ensuring success of the bloc’s neighborhood policy requires greater mobility of people, more trade and more aid.
"All this comes at a price. However, I believe it would cost us even more to deal with the consequences of poor economic performance, instability and conflicts in our neighborhood," he said.*
