Azeri scholar invents gas-powered diesel engine
An Azerbaijani scientist working for a university in neighboring
Turkey has made an historic invention by creating the first-ever
diesel engine operating on liquefied gas, Turkish media
reported.
Prof. Rafig Mehdiyev of the Istanbul Technical University says
environmental pollution is to blame for the world’s most
challenging problems, and the invention aims to counter this
alarming tendency.
"The engine operates on diesel fuel, but liquefied gas should be
used to make it environmentally friendly. Usually, transforming a
diesel engine into one operating on gas requires drastic changes.
However, the engine we have created makes it possible to use gas by
replacing the injector with a sparking plug."
The engine, created by Mehdiyev and his team, has been successfully
tested on a tractor.*
