18% of Azeris use Web: UN
The percentage of people using the Internet in
Azerbaijan is 18%, UNESCO estimated.
1,485,100 people are taking advantage of the Web in the country, whose population has lately reached 9 million, according to the organization’s 2009 report on Internet penetration around the world.
The figure is 22% in neighboring Georgia, where 1,024,000 people use the Web.
At present approximately one quarter of the world’s population uses the Web. Confirming the accuracy of this figure is a challenge, however, researchers estimate that worldwide Internet penetration is 25-26%, while the number of users is around 1.6-1.7 billion.
In Asia, South Korea and Japan’s Internet penetration was reported at 77% and 75% respectively.
The situation is mixed in Asia: a region that is home to half of the world’s population has almost half (42%) of the world’s Internet users but only every fifth person can be regarded as an Internet user, the UNESCO report said.
Every second person (52%) uses the Internet in Europe, but this figure does not show the differences between the most developed countries such as Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands – which reach and even surpass the usage data in the U.S. – and in Eastern European countries.
As for Internet usage per head, North America is in the lead with three out of four people using the Internet. About a seventh (14.6%) of the world’s total number of Internet users can be found in the United States and Canada. Compared with Africa, which is the least developed continent, huge differences can be observed: although three times as many people live in Africa, the number or Internet users is just a quarter of the number in America, and penetration has barely reached 7%.*
