IRI to shut Azerbaijan office March 31
The US International Republican Institute (IRI) will stop
operating in Azerbaijan on March 31, the head of its Baku office,
Jake Jones, said Monday, according to the opposition Musavat party.
The announcement was made in a meeting with the leader of Musavat
party Isa Gambar.
Gambar expressed disappointment with the IRI’s withdrawal from the
country. He said the activity of international democratic
institutions in Baku should be not restricted, but, on the
contrary, expanded, for the sake of strengthening US-Azerbaijan
relations and supporting democratic development and freedoms in the
country.
The IRI, which previously announced it was shutting down its office
in Baku over financial issues, said in late 2009 it would work in
the country until January 31, while its further operation depends
on the US Agency for International Development (USAID), adding
there was still a chance the institute would stay in
Azerbaijan.*
