U.S. says keen on ‘firm partnership’ with Azerbaijan
US Under Secretary of State William Burns has said the United States remains committed to establishing a firm partnership with Azerbaijan. The statement was made at the Baku airport upon completion of Burns’ visit to the country.
The State Department official said he had last visited Baku in 1992 and much has changed in Azerbaijan and the world ever since, but added: "The only thing that hasn’t changed is America’s intent to forge very strong partnership ties with Azerbaijan."
Burns said he had held positive and intense discussions with President Ilham Aliyev during which the sides explored ways of deepening cooperation between the two countries, adding that the expansion of ties would advance both US and Azerbaijani interests.
The US official said he hoped to visit Azerbaijan again, saying he would spare no effort to further develop bilateral relations.
Addressing the Azerbaijan Diplomacy Academy (ADA), Burns described the United States as Azerbaijan’s close friend.
"We have assumed a commitment to work with the Azerbaijani government and people to support a safe, developed and democratic state. A strong and dynamic partnership between the two countries is crucial at a time we are facing a number of global challenges which none of us can resolve single-handedly. I do believe we have such a partnership and my visit here today proves this once again."
The US embassy in Baku has said in a statement that Burns said Washington hails Azerbaijan’s support in Afghanistan, on anti-terror combat as well as regional and global security issues. The U.S. hopes its cooperation with Azerbaijan in these areas will further deepen, he said.*
