Analyst rules out Azeri-Turkish military alliance
Azerbaijan and fraternal Turkey’s signing a
strategic military partnership agreement is currently impossible,
an Azerbaijani analyst has said.
Elman Nasirov, who heads the Political Research Center of the State Administration Academy under the President, said, however, that if such an agreement is signed, Ankara will have to become directly involved in restoring Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, referring to the Armenian withdrawal from the occupied Azerbaijani territories. In that case, Russia, which has a military alliance with Armenia, Azerbaijan’s long-time foe, will rise to the ally’s defense. If military stand-off emerges between Russia and Turkey, NATO will have to defend Turkey, its member state.
"This would amount to the eruption of World War III," Nasirov told a conference, "Azerbaijan’s European integration: problems and prospects", organized by the NATO-Azerbaijan International School in Baku on Tuesday.
The analyst said that, considering these factors, Baku and Ankara should use the U.S.-Israel model for partnership. He noted that the two countries do not have a strategic military alliance, but Tel-Aviv is considered one of Washington’s closest partners in the region.
"Azerbaijan and Turkey can cooperate like this," Nasirov concluded.*
