Azerbaijan accuses ICRC of ‘double standard’
The Azerbaijan State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons has accused the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) of pursuing a “double standard” policy.
The ICRC did not allow the parents of Azerbaijani captive Samir Mammadov to write “Come back, we miss you a lot” in a letter to their son, the commission secretary-general Shahin Sayilov told journalists Wednesday.
Mammadov was seized near the Armenian borderline town of Ijevan on December 24, 15 km away from his military unit.
The ICRC maintained that the words could put pressure on the POW and encourage him to change his mind about refusing to return to Azerbaijan, Sahilov said.
“We allow Armenian captives and hostages and their parents to write whatever they please in their letters. [This suggests that] the Red Cross is pursuing a double standard policy toward our citizens,” he said.
Sayilov regarded the reports that Mammadov is reluctant to return to Azerbaijan as false and unfounded myths being spread by Armenians.
He said the letters sent to the detainee’s parents had not been written by Mammadov.
“The letters sent to his family say he allegedly does not want to come back. We have conducted an expertise on his hand-writing and established that he did not write that,” Sayilov added.*
