PACE rapporteurs hold closed-door meetings in Baku
The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) visiting Azerbaijan to monitor progress in the country’s implementing its CE commitments met with the leaders of political parties, NGOs and media outlets in Baku on Wednesday.
Andres Herkel and Joseph Debono Grech’s meetings were held behind closed doors and discussions were held separately with the head of each organization, according to Ilgar Ibrahimli, the head of the CE Information Office in Azerbaijan.
The leader of the opposition Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP), Sardar Jalaloglu, who attended the meeting, said he had discussed with the co-rapporteurs the situation in the country and the 2010 parliamentary elections.
Jalaloglu confirmed that the meeting was held in the one-on-one format. He also said that along with the governing Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP), the rapporteurs had meetings with the chairmen of the Umid (Hope), Popular Front, Musavat, Liberal and Civil and Development parties.
The PACE rapporteurs started their meetings in Azerbaijan on Monday from Ganja, the country’s second largest city. They are expected to wrap up their Baku visit on Thursday. Afterwards, Herkel and Grech are expected to prepare a report assessing the implementation of the country’s CE obligations. According to Herkel, the report will be submitted to the PACE session to be held in June. The document will outline issues regarding Azerbaijan’s development and challenges facing the country.*
