Eruption at mud volcano outside Baku
An eruption was observed on Thursday from the mud volcano in the
Lokbatan settlement of Baku, which is the most active such volcano
in the world.
The eruption, which started at around 10 a.m., lasted about an
hour, according to Azerbaijan’s environment ministry.
During the process, beginning with thunderous roaring, secretions
of mud were observed, but the mass, which spread over a vast area
of 1.5 hectares, did not flare up after all.
The Lokbatan volcano has now erupted a total of 23 times. The first
such development was reported in 1829, while the previous eruption
took place in October 2001.*
