Azeri paper editor gets suspended sentence
A Baku district court on Wednesday sentenced a newspaper editor
to an 18-month suspended sentence based on a libel lawsuit filed by
the interior minister.
Eyyub Karimov, editor-in-chief of Femida 007, a newspaper that
covers crime and legal issues, will also see 15 percent of his
monthly salary deducted.
Interior Minister Ramil Usubov’s lawsuit followed Karimov’s
claiming in an interview with the opposition newspaper Azadlig that
there are criminal groups in the Interior Ministry and that the
minister could not stay outside them. Karimov says, however, that
the charges against him are unfounded and that he had only
criticized the work of the police.*
