Armenian troops open fire during OSCE monitoring: officials
Sounds of shooting were heard from the Armenian side of the frontline during an OSCE monitoring held close to Azerbaijan’s Terter district on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry told AssA-Irada.
The shooting was reported by the OSCE representatives conducting the monitoring on the Azerbaijani side of the troops’ contact line, 8 km south-west of Terter. The OSCE chairman’s special envoy Andrjej Caspzyk and his field commanders, who were on the other side of the frontline, confirmed they had heard the firing, but Caspzyk claimed the sounds emanated from a shooting ground on the Armenian side.
Azerbaijani officers based near the district’s Borsunlu village said the Armenians had fired not only in the shooting ground but also at the Azerbaijani positions.
The two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious ceasefire in 1994 after fighting a lengthy war over the mountainous region of Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. However, Armenia continues violating the ceasefire and still occupies 20 per cent of Azerbaijan’s territory in defiance of international law.*
