Bush offers to up aid to Azerbaijan
US President George Bush has sent a bill to Congress to raise the amount of assistance to Azerbaijan in 2009.
The legislation aims to bring the figure from $18 million designated for 2008 to $19.5 million next year, according to the United States' draft budget.
The US government plans to slash its assistance to Armenia for next year. The allocations will be more than halved - from the current $58m to $24m.
The assistance to another South Caucasus republic - Georgia - will stay about the same and stand at $52m.
According to the bill, Azerbaijan and Armenia - the two regional states that have been in conflict for over a decade - will receive $3m each in military assistance in 2009. Moreover, Azerbaijan will be provided with an additional $900,000 for army logistics and military training, while Armenia - a third of the amount. Georgia, which is known for its Western-leaning stance, will receive by far more military aid next year - $11m.
The draft budget for 2009 sent by President Bush to the legislature amounts to a record high of $3.1 trillion.
