Parliament to set up body on occupied land
The Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani parliament) will set up a commission
on the country's territories under Armenian occupation to deal with
the many-decade-long history of Armenia's aggression against its
neighbor.
The issue was broadly discussed in the legislature on Friday. MP from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party Siyavush Novruzov noted that when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was established in 1918, a decision was passed to grant Yerevan to Armenia as the capital city, saying a commission should be set up to research the reasons of the measure. "This would be a due response to the Armenian claims on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic."
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said during a visit to the frontline Aghdam district in mid-January that the ADR leadership then transferred Azerbaijan's historic city of Irevan (presently Yerevan) to Armenia for the establishment of a political center there, terming this as a mistake.
Director of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences, MP Yagub Mahmudov said Armenia has launched "an all-out attack" on Azerbaijan, which requires a terse reaction from the Milli Majlis.
"Firstly, all the historic agreements on granting Azerbaijani land to Armenia must be reconsidered. We have substantial grounds to do so, as Armenians actually moved not only to Azerbaijani territories but the entire South Caucasus from Asia. Azerbaijan should therefore put forth a claim on the present-day Armenian land. Those territories are not only the lost lands of ours but also our sacred lands," the historian said.
He suggested that Baku raise the issue of not only granting Azerbaijani land to Armenia but also one on the deportation of Azerbaijanis from Armenia before international organizations.
Speaker Ogtay Asadov approved of the MPs' proposals. He said the commission should be set up straight away and lay out its views in a document by March 31.
