Italy seeks mediation in Garabagh talks: MP
Italy is seeking to become a co-chair in the OSCE Minsk Group (MG)
brokering talks on settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azerbaijani party leader has said.
MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of the pro-opposition United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, said in parliament Monday that the proposal on Italy’s mediation in the MG, which is co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, was made during an Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation’s recent visit to the country. Italian lawmakers said during the meetings that Rome, as an MG member, is looking to intensify the Garabagh peace process and is ready to become a co-chair in the organization to move forward the ongoing peace talks.
Hasanguliyev believes that, given that the MG co-chairing countries are presently adhering to a pro-Armenian stance, Italy’s proposal should be welcomed, as Rome exercises a natural approach to the developments ongoing in the turbulent region. Moreover, there are broad prospects for expanding Azerbaijani-Italian relations, the MP added.*
