Caspian sturgeon stocks under threat - int'l group
An international environment group has called on major importers
not to purchase caviar from the Caspian Sea littoral states,
warning against the decimation of sturgeon populations.
The World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) urged the coastal nations - Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan - to take urgent action to preserve the endangered species of the basin.
But Azerbaijan's ecology ministry said there was no need to ring the alarm bell.
"If the situation were indeed utterly dangerous, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) would not have set national quotas on sturgeon fishing and caviar exports [instead of banning them]," it said in a statement.
