Clinton, Russia’s Lavrov discuss Garabagh
Top foreign policy diplomats of the United States and Russia, the two countries brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh along with France, have met in London to discuss the long-standing dispute, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after holding talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Lavrov comprehensively informed Clinton about Monday’s tripartite meeting of the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian presidents held in the Russian town of Sochi.
The Russian minister said reaching a settlement to the conflict was complicated, but all interested parties were seeking to advance toward a solution.
The meeting between the Russian foreign minister and the US secretary of state took place prior to a conference on providing assistance to Afghanistan held in London on Thursday.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for nearly two decades. Peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but have brought little tangible result so far.
Clinton also met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on the sidelines of the London conference. The two discussed the future of the protocols on normalizing relations between Turkey and Armenia signed in 2009, Turkish Anatolian news agency reported. In this regard, views were exchanged on the state of reconciliation efforts following the top Armenian court’s ruling on the protocols.
Turkey and Armenia face decades of enmity. On October 10, 2009, the two governments signed two protocols to establish diplomatic relations and reopen their borders, in a bid to normalize their strained relations. On January 19, Armenia’s Constitutional Court upheld the October 2009 accord, but leveled certain pre-conditions, which angered Ankara.*
