OSCE rep concerned over media freedom in Azerbaijan
The OSCE representative on freedom of the media has expressed concern over the situation with freedom of speech in Azerbaijan, claiming media freedom has deteriorated in the country.
"A practice of arresting journalists on non-journalism charges has emerged in the law enforcement," Miklos Haraszti alleged at a Wednesday press conference held in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Haraszti maintained in reply to Radio Liberty’s question that these charges are often trumped up.
Further, the OSCE representative welcomed the fact that the process of adopting a libel law has begun in Azerbaijan. But he added: "For this to happen, detentions of journalists on non-journalism charges should stop first."*
