Four people were killed and 18 others injured in 16 explosions of mines and ammunition reported in Azerbaijan in 2009, according to the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).
121,903,509 square meters of territory have been cleared off mines and unexploded ordnances (UXO) so far; 576,311 mines and explosives were detected and destroyed in these areas, ANAMA said in a statement.
The agency is conducting mine clearance operations in the Terter, Aghdam, Fizuli, Tovuz, Aghstafa, and Goygol districts, as well as in the Garadagh district outside Baku.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. Large quantities of explosives remain in the frontline regions.*
