Turkish PM blames world for lingering Garabagh conflict
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused foreign countries and international groups of failing to do enough to address the unresolved Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh.
He said the fact that a million Azerbaijanis have been displaced as a result of the dispute was outright arbitrariness.
"The world community is failing to react to this in any way. We can see that world countries are playing against us," Erdogan told a congress of Turkic states in Baku on Saturday.
Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s, in defiance of international law.
Over 800 delegates from 30 countries participated at the eleventh congress of friendship, fraternity and cooperation, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and senior officials of other countries. The goal of the event was to promote brotherhood and collaboration among Turkic states in a variety of fields and to explore ways of solving common problems and propagating Turkic culture.
Erdogan said the mediating OSCE Minsk Group was adhering to an erroneous policy in addressing the Garabagh problem. "The intermediaries have failed to achieve any results so far. All they have been doing is delaying the [peace] process."
Erdogan said his country would always stand by Azerbaijan in its struggle for the liberation of its occupied land. "Garabagh is a bleeding wound of all Turkic states."
In his address, President Ilham Aliyev condemned the anti-Azerbaijan policy of the Armenian lobby and the countries acting as its benefactors.
"The world community is failing to criticize Armenia's policy of invasion properly," he said.
"Azerbaijan will have to resort to other means to liberate the occupied territories. I have no doubt that we will restore our territorial integrity, and this day is not far off," the commander-in-chief said.
