Israel FM due in Baku in Feb.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is expected to visit Azerbaijan in February, Israeli Ambassador Michael Lavon-Lotem has said.
Lavon-Lotem told the IzRus news portal that the Israeli embassy in Baku intends to hold an event on February 9 to introduce Azerbaijan to Israeli companies operating in the fashion and cosmetics industries.
"I hope that the minister will arrive exactly during those days," the ambassador said. "It will involve the elite and the ruling circles, and will give a great impetus to cooperation in these sectors. In addition, I am getting ready to organize a concert by an Israeli conductor and opera singer in April. I want to demonstrate not only our technologies and development, but also our cultural life."
Lavon-Lotem is currently in Israel. He headed to Israel last week to attend a conference organized by the country’s Foreign Ministry and met there with Minister Lieberman. After the conference, Lavon-Lotem stayed in Israel for a brief vacation.
According to IzRus, despite the economic crisis, 2009 was successful for Azerbaijan-Israel relations. Last year saw a number of agreements in the field of military cooperation, a major contract by the Shikun U'Binui company and rapidly growing trade between the two countries, which has turned Israel and Azerbaijan into strategic allies.
The ambassador noted that this year Israel exported goods worth $250 million to Azerbaijan, a rise of nearly 50 percent from 2008.
"Given the oil supply, goods worth $4 billion were exported to Israel in a tough year, when the global economy was trying to recover from the impact of the crisis! Without a doubt, one can say that we are on the right path, and the global crisis had bypassed us," noted Lavon-Lotem.
Representatives of two Israeli companies - Shikun U'Binui and Aeronautics – signed key agreements during President Shimon Peres’ visit to Azerbaijan in June 2009. Under the contracts, Shikun U'Binui will build a major highway worth $350 million in the country, while the other firm will construct a plant to develop high technology products.*
