Armenians fire at Azeri civilian; his fate unknown
An Azerbaijani rural resident came under Armenian fire in the western Tovuz district on Monday afternoon, the Baku-based ANS TV channel reported.
Maharram Gasymov, an executive official of the district’s Alibayli village, said that Eldar Taghiyev, a 46-year-old local resident, had accidentally approached the contact line of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops. The Armenian armed forces’ opening fire at the man was seen by Azerbaijani soldiers. However, it was impossible to determine whether Taghiyev had been killed or captured by the Armenian servicemen while he was still alive, as the incident took place after dark.
According to Gasymov, Taghiyev, a father of three, is suffering from mental illness, therefore, he is believed to have approached the line of fire lacking common sense.
Other local reports circulated that Taghiyev was subjected to shooting while fishing in a river and died on the spot.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia's territorial claims. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s in defiance of international law. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been fruitless so far. Sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.*
