Azerbaijan may raise contingent in Afghanistan
Azerbaijan may increase its military contingent in Afghanistan,
First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov told journalists Thursday.
A proposal was made to expand the country's contingent in the
war-torn nation at the last meeting of NATO foreign ministers.
According to Asgarov, who chairs the parliamentary committee on
security and defense, the Azerbaijani parliament has not yet
received an appeal to that end. "But if we receive an appeal, the
issue may be considered," he said.
Azerbaijan has been involved in peacekeeping operations since 1999.
The country sent its peacekeepers to Afghanistan in 2003. 90
Azerbaijani peacemakers are currently serving in the country as
part of the coalition forces.*
