Mine kills 71-year-old Azeri civilian on frontline
An elderly rural resident was hit by a mine on Wednesday in
Azerbaijan’s Terter district located on the frontline with
Armenia.
The 71-year-old man, who lives in the Borsunlu village, stepped on the anti-infantry mine while grazing cattle, setting off an explosion, local media reported. The man died on the spot.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but Armenia still occupies over 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue. Large quantities of explosives remain in the frontline area.*
