Azeri senior rights defender asks president to pardon 1,000 prisoners
Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova has appealed to
President Ilham Aliyev, requesting a pardon for 1,000 prisoners,
according to the Ombudsman’s office.
The senior rights defender examined the possibility of pardoning
these inmates after receiving appeals from their families, taking
into consideration that some of them regret their actions and do
not pose a threat to society.
The Ombudsman requested to include journalist Mushfig Huseynov in
the next amnesty act.
Up to 300 prisoners have been pardoned to date upon requests of the
Ombudsman.
Upon the initiative of First Lady, MP Mehriban Aliyeva, parliament
adopted an act of amnesty in March 2009 that covered thousands of
people.*
