British embassy denies employing man stabbed in Baku
The British embassy in Azerbaijan has dismissed the reports published earlier by local media saying a diplomat was involved in a stabbing incident in Baku.
The diplomatic representation said it did not employ James Burnhope, who was reportedly injured by a taxi driver after a dispute with a prostitute whom he had met at a night club.
The cab driver said he had urged the two to stop the bickering, but to no avail. He claimed the man then attempted to hit him but he managed to duck and stabbed the foreigner. Afterwards, the driver and the woman escaped the site but only to be arrested by the police. The diplomat was hospitalized, the reports quoted doctors as saying.
The Azerbaijan Interior Ministry continues investigation into the case.
"Burnhope has given testimony. A criminal case has been started with regard to the other two persons involved in the incident, and investigation is under way," the ministry said.
Burnhope has indicated that the reports about the incident were inaccurate. He was not immediately available to elaborate on the details.
