Azeri vice-speaker urges Islamic states to pressure Armenia
Azerbaijani First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov has called on
Arab and all Islamic nations to defend Baku’s fair cause in the
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and put pressure on Armenia.
Asgarov told a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference (OIC) Parliamentary Assembly in Cairo, Egypt that some
international forces are not interested in reaching a solution of
the Garabagh and Middle East conflicts. These disputes, he said,
can be resolved only by efforts of the OIC and the Islamic
world.
Asgarov recalled that the United Nations has passed four
resolutions condemning Armenia’s policy of occupying Azerbaijani
territory but none of them have been enforced so far. He said
Azerbaijan demands vacating its occupied land and reaching a
peaceful settlement to the long-standing Garabagh conflict.
The vice-speaker added that, in dealing with both the Garabagh and
Mideast problems, unity of the Arab and Islamic states should be
achieved instead of relying on the United States and the European
Union.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the
signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy
Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of
international law. Peace talks have not yet resulted in resolving
the conflict.*
