OSCE official praises preps for Azerbaijan’s local polls
Preparations for Azerbaijan’s municipal elections due on Wednesday
have been made in line with required norms both in terms of
administrative and governing issues to the greatest extent
possible, Bilge Cankorel, head of the OSCE Office in Baku, has
said.
Cankorel told reporters that government agencies have taken the necessary steps to ensure democratic conduct of the elections.
"The Central Election Commission has accepted some complaints and the disagreement has been eliminated. The complaints about forgery of signatures stand out the most here. I believe measures are to be taken in the future to remove their root causes."
Cankorel cited some shortfalls as well, saying election hopefuls include very few opposition representatives. "There were so few of those candidates that they could not even join campaigns on state television. This is a matter that should be definitely considered in the future."
The OSCE official explained the opposition’s nominating an insufficient number of candidates by the lack of their organization and confidence in the local polls.
15,682 members will be elected to 1,718 local bodies. About 32,000 candidates have been registered. 18 political parties will be represented at the election. Hopefuls running for the election are members of a total of 30 parties.*
