Cleric slams radical sects
An Azerbaijani cleric has said some in both the West and East who envy the country's rampant economic development are trying hard to stage provocations in Azerbaijan and delegating their emissaries.
The Caucasus Clerical Office chairman, Sheikh Allahshukur Pashazada hit out at radical sects.
"Our citizens should understand that representatives of radical sects, under the cover of Islam supporters, adhere to a hostile position toward our religion, our people and statehood," he told a news conference held in Baku on the occasion of November 16, the International Day of Tolerance. "The intolerance, calls to civil stand-off and attempts to split the society from within reperesent violence and aim to justify terror."
The cleric said that radical Wahhabis, Nurists and other criminal groups hurt holy Islam by their actions and set the stage for the escalation of attacks and accusations against the Muslim religion.
"The provocateurs must know that the Azerbaijani government is capable of nipping in the bud such instances and will do so," he said.
