Israeli official to hold talks in Baku ahead of FM’s visit
Pinhas Avivi, Deputy Director General of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, will be in Azerbaijan December 20-23 to make preparations for the first visit of his country’s Foreign Minister.
According to Israel’s IzRus news protal, Minister Avigdor Lieberman is scheduled to arrive in Baku next February.
Along with preparations for the visit, Avivi will discuss relations between the two countries during his meetings in Baku.
Lieberman’s visit was discussed at a meeting of the two countries' foreign ministers in Athens Dec. 1. At that meeting, the Israeli minister invited his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov to Israel.
In the first half of 2009, Azerbaijan was the only CIS country whose trade with Israel increased. The South Caucasus republic was second after Russia in terms of the volume of oil supplied to Israel. As a result, Azerbaijan has virtually become Israel's major economic partner in the Islamic world.*
