Armenian ceasefire breach interrupts OSCE monitoring
An OSCE monitoring being held on the contact line of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops in Azerbaijan's Fuzuli district on Tuesday was interrupted due to an Armenian ceasefire violation, according to the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry.
The field assistants of the OSCE chairman-in-office are scrutinizing the circumstances of the incident.
The Armenian armed forces also infringed upon ceasefire in the early morning hours. From 3.30 to 3.35 a.m. the Armenian servicemen subjected the opposite positions of the Azerbaijani troops near the Kangarli village of the Aghdam district to machine and submachine gun fire. The shooting ceased after retaliation, with no casualties reported.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The United States, Russia and France are mediating peace talks through the Minsk Group, which was established at an OSCE ministerial in 1992.*
