US aid to self-proclaimed republic exceeds $200m: MP
The United States has provided assistance totaling over $200 million to the self-proclaimed regime in Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation, in the past 17 years, MP Zahid Oruj, deputy chairman of Ana Vatan party, said.
He said the assistance is serving to keep afloat the military junta in the region, as the allocated funds are not being duly spent for humanitarian purposes.
The lawmaker noted that, in addition, the U.S. has provided more than $2 billion worth of such assistance to Armenia in the past 17 years. He said this assistance is no different than Russia’s providing complimentary arms to Yerevan. On the contrary, US companies involved in operating oil fields in Azerbaijan are making contributions to the US state budget, while these funds are being used to aid Armenia.
"It turns out that the assistance to Armenia is being provided at our own expense," said Oruj.
Upper Garabagh has been occupied by Armenia since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Years of peace talks have brought few tangible results.*
