Ahmadinejad hails Baku’s turning down anti-Tehran vote
Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has hailed
Azerbaijan’s not joining a vote on a draft document against Tehran
at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the country’s
nuclear program.
After hosting Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Tehran on Monday, Ahmadinejad thanked Baku for the decision, regarding it as an example of brotherhood, Turkish media reported.
Ahmadinejad termed Iran-Azerbaijan relations as friendly and fraternal, saying major steps are being taken toward closer cooperation between the two countries, which are linked with historical bonds. He added that expanding bilateral relations is beneficial for both countries as well as the entire region.
Mammadyarov, for his part, pointed to tangible advances made in the political and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Iran in the past years. He pledged that Baku would not back decisions defying the neighboring country in international organizations.
During his one-day visit to Iran, Mammadyarov held meetings with his counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki, Saeed Jalili, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.*
