211 Armenian truce violations in three months: Defense Ministry
Armenian armed forces violated ceasefire on the frontline 211 times in the past three months, according to the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroglu.
He told a news conference Thursday that most of the violations had been reported in the Fuzuli, Khojavand, Terter and Aghdam districts. The Armenian military sustained twice as many casualties as the Azerbaijani side.
The OSCE, which is brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, conducted monitoring on the contact line seven times. The monitoring concluded without casualties.
Sabiroglu also said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent statement about a possible war had utterly perturbed Armenia. "It is for this reason that several members of the Armenian parliament have demanded that their government appeal to international organizations, in a bid to divert Azerbaijan from its calls for war."
We recall that President Aliyev said prior to the November 22 talks with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisian in Munich that if the negotiations failed to yield results, peace talks with Yerevan would be halted and Azerbaijan could move to regain its occupied territories by force.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Despite numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered negotiations, peace talks have been fruitless so far and refugees remain stranded.
Sabiroglu said the Armenian military is not in a shape that allows to be successful if hostilities erupt.
"We have statistical data saying that the Armenian Defense Ministry is unable to form military units. There is no manpower. Hundreds of abandoned villages have emerged in Armenia, and people are heading elsewhere. Therefore, the Armenian Defense Ministry is unable to staff military units."*
