Sarkisian threatens to revoke Turkey reconciliation deal
Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has claimed that Turkey’s
attempts to link settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh with Turkish-Armenian relations are doomed
to fail, hinting that Yerevan could invalidate the recently signed
agreement on normalizing bilateral ties.
"Armenia is ready to properly meet its international commitments and ratify the signed protocols [the agreement on forging diplomatic relations and reopening its border with Turkey signed with Ankara on October 10]. We are expecting the same from Turkey, but if Turkey delays their ratification, we will immediately avail of the possibilities stemming from international law," Sarkisian told a news conference with his Latvian counterpart Valdis Zatlers.
Sarkisian said he had instructed relevant government agencies to draft amendments to the laws concerning approval of the normalization accord and the procedure of revoking international agreements.
"I am stating that, the longer the process drags on, the more obstacles will emerge on the way to settling Armenian-Turkish relations," he added.
The statement comes just days after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during talks with US President Barack Obama in Washington that normalization of ties with Yerevan depends on the settlement of the Garabagh conflict.*
