Risks high in some CIS states - British group
Political and security risks are quite low in European countries,
including the Baltic states, in contrast to a number of former
Soviet republics, a British group says.
Most foreign investment in the world is made in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Monaco, Norway and Andorra, according to independent consultancy Control Risks' annual study, Risk Map 2008, which rated 57% of emerging markets.
It said risks in Russia were quite high, just like in the South Caucasus republics Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, as well as in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Belarus was rated as a country with high political risks.
The group also found that in many cases trends towards economic nationalism, a retreat to authoritarianism and reform fatigue are prompting concerns that politics will increasingly impinge on investment decisions. Investments in countries as wide ranging as Russia, Pakistan, Nigeria and Ecuador could be at increased risk, it said.
Control Risks was founded in 1975 with 18 offices on five continents. The group provides advice and services that enable companies and governments to accelerate opportunities and manage strategic and operational risks.
