Six deaths from torture reported in Azerbaijan this year
Six people have died of torture in Azerbaijan so far in 2009, a
local committee dealing with related issues has said.
"Three deaths occured during torture, while three others were driven to a point of committing suicide as a result of torture," claimed Elchin Behbudov, chairman of the Committee Against Torture.
Behbudov told a press conference on Monday that his organization had received 110 complaints from citizens in the mentioned period. 15 of the people allegedly tortured are women. There are underage persons among those who faced torture as well, according to the Committee chairman.
Behbudov said this year’s figures exceed those of 2008. Thus, 81 appeals were filed to the committee last year, with three deaths reported.
He maintained that no one has been held accountable for torture so far.
"We have appealed to relevant bodies over the incoming cases. But all of the replies made to date indicated that these facts have not been confirmed," Behbudov said.*
