Armenia parliament to mull war warnings
Azerbaijani leaders’ recent warnings that the country could move to free its occupied territory by force will be discussed in the Armenian parliament.
The Armenian government has approved a draft law brought forward by a lawmaker suggesting that the legislature adopt a statement "On Azerbaijan’s responsibility for a transformation of the Upper Garabagh conflict settlement into military stand-off", Novosti Armenii news agency reported.
The bill alleges that, Azerbaijan, distorting facts, is seeking to form a biased and erroneous opinion amidst the international community about the outset and unfolding of the Garabagh conflict, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Savarsh Kocharian claimed at a government meeting. Kocharian said the statement stresses the need for what he called "redrawing the real picture of the conflict in international institutions", while pointing to Azerbaijan’s being allegedly responsible for its exacerbation.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had said that, if the November 22 talks with Armenian leader Serzh Sarkisian in Munich, Germany failed to yield results, peace talks with Yerevan would be halted and Azerbaijan could move to regain its occupied territories by force.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia's territorial claims. Armenia has since been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory dating to the early 1990s in defiance of international law. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but over a decade of efforts by US, Russian and French mediators have so far been fruitless.*
