Aliyev, Sarkisian to meet at French consulate in Munich
The next round of talks on the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict
between Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh
Sarkisian due in Munich, Germany this weekend will be held at
France’s general consulate residence, according to the French
Foreign Ministry’s website.
Paris said the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the
peace process hope the sides will accomplish progress based on the
Madrid principles, a peace outline proposed by the mediators in
2007.
Some Azerbaijani media outlets reported Thursday quoting diplomatic
sources that the meeting will take place on Sunday.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the
signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy
Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of
international law. Peace talks have not yet resulted in resolving
the conflict.*
