Baku, Tbilisi in talks over building new power lines

22 November 2007 15:31 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijan and Georgia are in talks on building new high-voltage electricity transmission lines, President Ilham Aliyev told a meeting dedicated to the situation in the energy sector last week.
He said the construction of such lines between the two countries would allow the country to export electric power in the future.
"This could be a major regional project through which Azerbaijan's electric power would be taken to the markets of Georgia and Turkey," the president said.
The head of state went on to say that Azerbaijan's electric power lines have also been linked to the electricity transmission networks of Russia and Iran, and the construction of the Imishli-Parsabad line is currently under way.
"This will allow us to exchange 700 MWt of electricity. Linking the entire region - both to the west and from north to south, i.e. connecting Russian and Iranian electricity distribution lines - is possible only through Azerbaijan's territory. This will certainly be a tremendous regional project both in terms of economics and regional cooperation, and in all other ways."
